Bulgarian Performer Azis Blows Us Away
Written by NetBear on January 13, 2008 – 1:32 am -When it comes to popular music in Bulgaria there’s one style that dominates the scene: that’s Chalga. Chalga is a blend of eastern Turkish rhythms, western pop and local folk music. And the king (queen?) of Chalga is a cross-dressing singer named Azis.

Azis is the only Bulgarian performer who can fill a soccer stadium. And it’s no wonder. His performance persona ranges from a brooding Sister of Perpetual Indulgence to a pleather clad butch drag. But what really caught our eye is Azis’ taste in men. He likes ‘em big, muscular and furry.

Azis was born as Vasil Troyanov Boyanov on March 7th, 1978. He began his political career in 2005 as a member of the EuroRoma political party and ran in the general elections campaign that year. On August 5th, 2007 Azis became a father with husband Niki Kitaetsa, seen in the photo below. They were married October 1st, 2006. But like in America, Bulgaria does not officially recognize their marriage.

This all sounds like the life of any up and coming drag artist in San Francisco, right? Well, check out this music video and you’ll be hooked on Azis’ music. Manly businessman Azis smokes a cigar as he talks to a room full of studly young men. They get sent off to change into their Daisy Dukes and hardhats. That’s where some locker room action starts to sizzle. The trio then heads off to a construction site to jackhammer while a transmogrified Sistah Azis sings her heart out. Our rough translation of the lyrics came up with something about beauty and serpents, go figure.
Make sure you watch the video to the end where one of the construction workers shows his admiration for butch boss Azis. If you remember where this music video was filmed and televised, you have to admire Azis for blowing open the closet door so well.
It doesn’t really matter if your Bulgarian is rusty or not. Azis is an amazing performer that blew our minds. Something tells us that Azis has blown quite a few bears along the way too. ![]()
