Colossal Clothing Company Targets Bears

Dave Friedman is your average straight married guy. He’s got a house, a baby and he’s put on a few pounds. For guys like him stores sell Hawaiian shirts, t-shirts that could double as rain tarps and what Dave calls “Sopranos wear.”

In response Dave got together with a designer and created The Colossal Clothing Company. His company creates clothing for the big and tall man. Dave says, “Typically big guys don’t necessarily hang out together. They’re not easy to target. You need people who congregate, and that’s when it occurred to us. You know what? Gay big men do. May I introduce the Bears?”

The Bears are a subset of the gay community known for their flannel, their scruffy beards and the size of their waist lines.

Colossal’s slogan is, “We Make Bigger Better.” How, you might ask? They use better fabrics and they use better tailoring. Well, they must be doing something right since they’ve earned the endorsement of Mike Ditka’s Gridiron Greats and Bruce Laird’s Fourth and Goal. These are two groups that help ex-NFL players in need of health care and other assistance.

But is Colossal-wear fashionable? Their windbreaker design, shown at right, was picked-up by apparel designer Marc Jacobs. Jacobs intends to produce his own version of the garment using different luxury fabrics in the near future. Singer Kanye West likes Colossal so much he had them create the Tron jacket for him to wear on Saturday Night Live. Tailored from a fine grey canvas, and featuring integrated electric tubing, the jacket is powered by dual battery packs.
