Bear Or Not? Village People’s Glenn Hughes
Written by BignFuzzy on March 4, 2008 – 6:00 am -The first time I saw the Village People perform live on TV in 1977 I thought they were way cool. The buzz was that the group was gay. But of course I couldn’t take my eyes off the guy in leather.

His name was Glenn Hughes. His chest hair looked like a doormat and that strong jaw accented by the thick c*cksucker mustache just drove me wild.
As time passed and the group released the campy YMCA and Macho Man songs, the group became a mainstream hit though they lost a lot of credibility with gay men. But I never lost my attraction for Glenn Hughes. We didn’t have the term “bears” back then. But in retrospect I think Glenn qualified. What do you think? Would you have had Glenn in your Den?

It was 1977 and I was the only gay guy hangin’ out with a group of straight guys n’ girls. We were all heavily into the early disco scene and eagerly awaiting each new release. My friend Steve came over to the house one night with a new album tucked under his arm. “Check it out! They’re called the Village People. They’re a tough looking bunch’a guys and the music is great!” I looked at the album cover, there was a Harley and a bunch of hot looking men dressed in plaid and tight Levis. I didn’t know that it was called Gaydar back then but I knew that mine was being set off big time.

I plopped the record on the turntable and dropped the needle down. The first track: San Francisco. Great beat, cool horns, soulful vocals. We nodded our heads and grooved to the sound. “This is fuckin’ great! I’m gonna take it to the club tonight and ask the DJ to play it!” Steve was looking triumphant that his find was so well received by us.
Later that week we turned the TV on and saw the Village people in all their gay glory; leather, Levis, hard hats, cowboy gear, feathers! Fabulous! They could dance too. Everyone was talking about the new disco group and they were queer!
Steve, who was always protective of his record collection came over with something in a bag. “Present for you, it’s that Village People album. I got tired of it, you can have it.”
Heh, free stuff… Sometimes it pays to be gay!

Most people overlook just how revolutionary and subversive the Village People were. Yes, simple disco pop songs with ridiculous lyrics, fun as fuck yet they were unabashedly gay ……like super gay ….but selling 12 million albums. They took “gay” to the point of acceptability where an eight year old kid could get mom and dad to buy them a plastic Village People “Leather Man” Halloween costume at the supermarket. I think thats fucking cool.
check out the Glenn Hughes costume
