FeedForeBears: Dan Blocker As Hoss Cartwright
Written by BignFuzzy on March 6, 2008 – 3:11 pm -World Wrestling Entertainment announcer Jim Ross gives the nickname “Hoss” to many of the larger sized wrestlers in homage to Hoss Cartwright of Bonanza fame. We can see why! At 6’3” and 300 pounds, Hoss was a big bear of a man.
As a kid I was never really into Westerns. Sci-fi was more my bag, but I watched Bonanza. You might ask why, after all nobody was getting beamed-up or fighting intergalactic battles.
It was because of Hoss Cartwright. Played by Dan Blocker, Hoss was a loveable big lug, an “Awww shucks” slap on the beefy shoulder kinda’ guy. That broad face, strong jaw, bright eyes and quirky grin always pulled me in. The thick mat of hair on his chest didn’t hurt either.
I did wonder why this big ol’ hunk in his ten gallon hat was nicknamed Hoss. I would have understood if his size had garnered a nickname like Moose or even Bear, but Hoss? Were they applying an equine moniker to this guy for some other reason? Hmmmmm…
What a doll! Hoss with pose-able limbs and removable clothing. Ooooh…

Now can you see why Little Joe may have been more deserving of the nickname Hoss? In those tight pants Michael Landon as Little Joe ain’t so little!
The third brother, Adam played by actor Pernell Roberts, also went on to become something of a bear later in life. Hmm, we feel another ForeBears article is in the works.

Dan was actually my second cousin on my mother’s side. I’ve never found fat guys sexy, but the fact that he was related to me put the kabosh on it anyway. : ) Nice guy, though.

That’s pretty cool, Wade. You had bear royalty in the family. Heh. So was Dan’s real life personality similar to the Hoss Cartright character?

HE IS ALSO MY COUSIN ON MY MOTHERS SIDE MY GRANDMOTHER WAS A BLOCKER MY NAME IS ANDY AND I LOOK JUST LIKE HIM AS WELL
