Artist James Gobel Goes On A Bear Hunt

Creating his works from a mix of felt, yarn, fabric and paint — James Gobel’s paintings celebrate the unsung sensuality of heavyset men.

Works From James Gobel’s “Bear Hunting”

Like most young artists, Gobel was able to discover his calling only by first collecting a bunch of stuff he wanted to look at. That stuff turned out to be pinup magazines featuring large men: Bear, Bulk Male, Heavy Duty, American Bear, American Grizzly, Husky and The Big Ad.

This new series entitled “Bear Hunt” grew out of portraits Gobel made of two fashion designers, Robert Tagliapietra and Jeffrey Costello. “The concept is that these fashionable bear men are hunting for each other in this palatial estate.”

Here are some of Gobel’s previously presented works. These big-boy dandies, so intricate and lovingly rendered, are vibrant and bold to the eye. The fitting use of fuzzy fabrics like felt connotes a warmth that paint alone could never achieve.

Kudos and compliments regarding your work; they are handsome and I like your style. Lookin’ forwards to seeing more (even via the compooter) I thank you again for creating some wonderful art celebrating those of us who appreciate the Ursine world (if you want to call it that.) [I would offer you a cigar but that’s probably illegal where you live.]
