Wrestling Legend John “Big John Studd” Minton

Today we are honored to have a guest posting by Will from Bear Mythology.
I have been an avid fan of Bearotic.com because it is one of the few sites/blogs out there that provide quality content about our Bear culture and lifestyle. I also love the clever term “Bearotic.” So when I was asked to contribute to the site, I instantly had a great Bear Icon in mind to share who’s bearfect for Bearotic.com: John “Big John Studd” Minton.

Big John Studd was the epitome of a “Bear”: a tall and massive hulk of a man whose mere look alone would conjure images of a great bear beast.

My introduction to pro-wrestling came at a perfect time when I was about 13 years old, an age of sexual awakening and curiosity. I was living in Hawaii when I uncovered the beautiful “sport” of pro wrestling: near-naked massive men groping and wrestling with each other, arrogant heels showing off their beefy muscles, and baby face heroes enduring beat downs who mostly overcome their cocky foes. Homoerotic? Yes. But with bigger bearish men in the mix it is more than homoerotic — it is definitely “bearotic.”

Big John Studd’s towering and massive frame while in the squared circle demanded our full attention. With his thick blond mane and darkly-tinted beard, he appeared more animal than man; and with his thick and bulky physique, one could not help but stare at awe at this image of 365 pounds of bearish perfection.

I was instantly smitten the first time I laid my eyes on Big John Studd. To me, he was Grizzly Adams’ “evil” doppelganger. I even loved the fact that he was mostly a heel, or villain, as I was attracted to such displays of brutish masculinity. True, he was nothing more than a stereotypical dumb jock whose only purpose in life was to growl and beat on people. But I didn’t care. Pro-wrestling was a show. It was a fantasy play. Sure, I may have had a different “interpretation” of such theatrics. But like it or not, the “bearotic” nature of pitting a near-naked giant bear man against other men will always come to fruition. Gay or not, the whole thing is completely erotic.

To this day, nothing comes close to Big John Studd’s presence in the ring. He was never a technical wrestler, and most could argue that he was not even a “good” wrestler. But the thing was, he knew how to work and sell his bearish appearance.
And, really, who cares? Just being able to see this big bear wrestle was good enough to me, and I’m sure to every bear admirer as well. In the end, that was all that mattered, especially to a curious teenager pleasantly discovering what a “Bear” looked like.
Watch this match between Hulk Hogan/Paul Orndorff vs. Big John Studd/King Kong Bundy to get some of that Studd-ly wrestling magic.
