FeedFrankie Says Check Out Paul Rutherford
Written by BignFuzzy on May 15, 2008 – 5:27 am -Thinking about the upcoming FlashDance SF in San Francisco, we were pondering on how many bearish looking guys were in the 80s music industry. Paul Rutherford of Frankie Goes To Hollywood had that Castro Clone kinda look.
When asked about Paul Rutherford, Frankie say, “He was Liverpool’s Nureyev, the George Harrison of it all.” Yeah, he sure was cute.
The Relax video, banned in many countries, was an exuberant orgy of fetishes and youthful freedom. Their brash attitude with presenting this big dripping dish of Frankie pie and shoving it in the face of a thrilled, delighted and sometimes shocked and irate public tickled me to the quick. I LOL’d when I first saw the video but it also stirred something inside me that I didn’t often look at head-on. It still stands up today as a slice of 80s attitude wrapped in punk rock and coated in disco cologne laced with poppers.
When asked about their influences and who they went on to influence, Frankie say: “Judy Garland, Led Zeppelin, Andy Warhol, The Village People, The Sex Pistols, Jackson 5, Salvador Dali, The Bay City Rollers, The Damned, The Monkees, Joan Crawford, The Spice Girls, Curiosity Killed The Cat, T-Rex, Madonna, KLF, The Who, Sylvester, Happy Mondays, Cher, The Beastie Boys.”

You couldn’t quite tell if they were Rock n Roll or Disco, deadly serious or silly fools. You couldn’t tell if they were dangerous or sweet young things, offensive or pathetic. Truth is, they were all of these things, and more.
We have a suspicion that DJ Rotten Robbie’s gonna spin some FGTH at FlashDance SF. So throw on yer Daisy Dukes and come get down n’ dirty on the dance floor with all us sweaty bears to those classic 80s beats!
