Oliver Reed & Alan Bates: Men In Love!
Written by BignFuzzy on July 1, 2008 – 5:52 am -I was 14 years old in 1969 when Women In Love was first released. The newspapers and TV were buzzing with the news that there was a nude wrestling scene between Oliver Reed and Alan Bates. Little tantalizing clips of it were shown on TV and everyone was shocked and intrigued.

The movie was X-rated, meaning you had to be 18 to get in. I was a heavily built 14 year old and was already growing sideburns and a moustache so I could easily pass for 18. Sitting there in the darkness of the cinema I was rather bored by the intricate dialog of the movie, all I wanted was to see those two men naked together in front of that blazing fire and candle light.
When the scene came I wasn’t disappointed. The undressing, the slapping of each other playfully, the beads of sweat and flopping dicks and balls, sinewy muscles and whiskers was well worth waiting for. The crackling fire and grunts and groans stirred something in me, something primal. I knew I liked men but this was the first time I’d ever seen two grown men come together in this way.
Sure, I’d fantasized about gladiators and pirates and lumberjacks in the forest but here they were on the big screen not only clamping themselves to each other with a wet passion but there was more. It wasn’t just physical, these guys loved each other! What a concept! My 14 year old gay brain took all this in with hope and elation. Could this happen to me? Could I find a big burly man to be intimate with? Share our sex and our dreams and aspirations, but most importantly, our love?
Gerald was played by Oliver Reed, The yummy Alan Bates was Rupert. Here’s how the scene played out:
Gerald: By God, l’d just concluded that nothing mattered in the world except somebody to take the edge off one’s being alone. The right somebody.

Rupert: Meaning the right woman, l suppose?
G: Yes, of course. Failing that… an amusing man.

R: Well, if you’re bored, why not try hitting something?
G: Possibly. Providing it was something worth hitting. You ever done any boxing?
R: No. You mean, you may as well hit me?
G: You? Well, yes, perhaps… in a friendly sort of way, of course.
R: Oh, quite.
G: You know, l’ve got the feeling that…if l don’t watch myself… I shall do something silly.
R: Why not do it?
The Bearskin rug gets tossed aside to make way for some bare skinned wrestling.

R: You can’t do much in a stuffed shirt.
G: All right, let’s strip and do it properly.
R: Very good.

R: One ought to strive, wrestle and be physically close. lt makes one sane.

R: We are mentally and spiritually close. Therefore, we should be physically close, too. lt’s more complete.

R: You know how the old German knights used to swear blood-brotherhood?

G: Yes… Make wounds in their arms… and run blood into each other’s cuts.

R: Yes. And swear to be true to each other, of one blood all their lives.

R: That’s what we ought to do. No wounds, l mean that’s obsolete.

R: But we ought to swear to love each other, you and l.

R: lmplicitly. Perfectly…

R: Finally, without any possibility of ever going back on it.

R: Shall we swear to each other one day?

G: We’ll wait till l understand it better.

R: Well, at any rate…

R: One feels freer and more open now.

R: And that’s what we want.

G: Certainly.
This movie was a turning point for me. I didn’t care about the story or the other characters. I just went home with a prouder step, a head held higher, a feeling of validation. A man’s man, that’s what I was destined to be!
If you wanna see the full monty version of this bearotic scene, get the movie!

Awesome post!!! Thank you for sharing that wonderfully vivid experience of your sexual awakening. And what a scene to do just that! I mean, Oliver Reed and Alan Bates! This movie is definitely a keeper and a classic piece of homoeroticism, or in this case, bearoticism. Speaking of which, clever use of the Bearotic logo covering up the naughty bits. Love!

I never knew about this movie! Yeah, that kind of imagery at that time in history would be considered pretty racy. But talk about hot!
