William Shatner Does Pulp With Common People

I’ve always loved Britpop band Pulp ever since I was turned on to the 1995 album Different Class. On that album is the anthemic song entitled Common People, a heartfelt passionate number about an interaction between a spoiled over-privileged girl and a low income working class guy.

william shatner has been album cover

On William Shatner’s album Has Been he does a rendition of it that only Captain Kirk could do. Cheesy you say? Maybe, but I tell ya, this track ROCKS!

Youtube user kirkslashspock ads a cool gay twist to the proceeding by turning the over-privileged girl character into Spock! The song sets the scene with a slow start, but hold on, it picks up intensity with some great fuzzy distorted guitar and rousing hi-speed drumming juxtaposed with Shatner’s almost monotonic vocal delivery. A technique used to good effect by the Pet Shop Boys.

As the music builds Shatner is joined by the amazing Joe Jackson with his feverish stirring delivery of the chorus. This brilliant home made video compiles footage from the Star Trek animated series with the song dubbed over it. Turn your speakers up high and get ready to play those air drums!

Thanks to the creator of this fun little vid, I can’t stop watching it!

Wanna see a handsome young bear do Common People?
This guy really gets it. Here he is!

Wanna see William beef up his vocal and Joe totally rock it out, live? Dig it!

Please don’t feel tempted to dismiss the William Shatner album as cheesy, it’s a musical wolf in sheep’s clothing. Give it a listen!
