Papa Hemingway And The Importance of Being Ernest
Written by BignFuzzy on July 7, 2008 – 5:40 am -Do you like your bears on the polar side? Lots of people do. They love that salt ‘n peppery lived-in look — the craggy features and bristly beard. The epitome of the polar bear look many would say belongs to Ernest “Papa” Hemingway.

So much so that every year in Key West, Florida there is a Papa Hemingway look-alike contest.
Wow! If younger dark-furred bears are the polar opposite to what floats your boat get a load of this group of salty dogs!

Each year a different Papa gets to hold the trophy high and be the nearest thing to Ernest for a while.

We know one or two polar bear chasers who would be in hawg heaven if they were nuzzled in the middle of this group of grizzlies.

Papa Joe’s bar on Duval Street in Key West is where all this fur gathers, just in case you’re planning a trip through the Keys to see the action.

Here’s a sepia-toned hot shot of the original Ernest looking every inch a weathered ol’ tar like the Old Man And The Sea.

Ernest wasn’t always a craggy ol’ geezer. In his youth he was handsome in a very different way, almost Castro Clone-ish we think.

Ernest Hemingway was famous for writing some classic tomes in his time. We have to wonder what he might have thought of all these men coming together each year to emulate his look and giving him a different kind of fame.
