Blowoff Takes The Bears On A Whole New Trip

Residents of the San Francisco bay area recently got a chance to enjoy the Blowoff party experience. On September 6th Bob Mould and Rich Morel brought their talent to Slims in the South of Market.

Rich Morel Whips The Crowd Into A Frenzy At Blowoff SF Sept 2008

We’ve heard a lot about Blowoff which has a near cult following Washington DC and New York. So when the party came to San Francisco we had to take it in. Bearotic and event photographer ELAREE were there to listen, dance and try to capture what the east coast Blowoff scene is all about.

Situated on a small platform set at the base of the stage, a small, simple DJ space rises a foot or so above the dance floor itself. This vantage point embeds the DJs into their audience, surrounded by the energy of the people that want to get down, get sweaty and dance. It wasn’t long into the night before the DJs threw off their shirts along with everyone else on the dance floor.

A lone video screen behind the stage projected vividly colored animated clips. Vintage muscle man imagery would morph into a Blowoff stained-glass poster man, setting the stage visually for the electro trance that invited everyone to grind their body down to the beat.

Since Bob and Rich are getting older and fuzzier, so too is their audience; and nicely so, we must say. But it’s not just middle-aged bears that make it to these events. Blowoff cuts right across the gay male demographic and includes younger men, cubs, pups, chubs and grizzlies.

They all seemed to have an edge, whether it was tattoos, fetish gear, facial hair or hot furry muscles. And they all mixed together perfectly at Blowoff, sharing the space and enjoying the experience.

Working sometimes in tandem, sometimes taking turns, both Mould and Morel could easily have been part of the audience. Indeed, at times it was difficult to see who was enjoying the other’s company more. Was it the DJ’s enjoying the audience more? Or the audience enjoying the DJs more?

Throughout the night the space near the DJ platform was populated by hot, sweaty men. Some would bump and grind into each other, lubricated by the sweat flowing off their bodies. While others would dance solo, tugging at each other with smiles, bad boy looks and steamy body movements.

Mould and Morel weave a audio tapestry that is full of surprises, but is still consistent enough to keep ‘em on the dance floor. Early in the evening I heard a familiar riff that took me back to my days as a pre-teen, listening to records at a friend’s house. The DJ’s invoked Alice Cooper to chant We’re All Clones to a heavy downbeat, as if to declare that the Castro Clones reigned supreme that night.

A little further into the evening I could hardly believe my ears as some familiar synth riffs clued me into what would be coming in the mix. Soon Sylvester’s voice soared above a crowd jumping with enthusiasm as Do Ya Wanna Funk whipped the San Francisco Blowoff audience into adulation for a local diva’s anthem

What force of nature could bring together so many hot men? While the eye candy and raw sexual energy of the event had its effect, it was the music that bound them all. Throbbing electro bass drove everyone to work for a climax, which came and did not fail to inspire and impress.

The Crowd Gets Riled At Blowoff

As 2AM rolled near, I started feeling a sense of remorse. I did not want this evening to come to an end. I was having too much fun enjoying a fresh musical mix that still took time to appreciate the past. I was having a ball getting hot and sweaty dancing in a hot group of guys. I think I’ve caught that Blowoff bug that I’ve heard so much about.

Bob Mould and Rich Morel create something special. It’s not a big, complex party, by any means. The lighting is effective but subdued. The video is amusing and makes a good backdrop for the stage. But soon after walking in the door you will discover that your feet will want to start moving. You’ll start to notice lots of different body types getting hot and sweaty along with DJs who are shirtless too. No matter what your preference might be, you’ll see cute guys having a good time.

If you like to dance, this is the kind of environment that keeps you coming back. When everyone takes off their shirts, you’ll feel like you want to do it too. When a wicked synth line drives the audience into a frenzy, you’ll want to hoot and holler with everyone. You’ll want to become one of those hot guys working the dance floor.

When Blowoff comes to your neck of the woods, you will.

Very well said, and great pictures! That party was such a blast, with Bob and Rich enjoying themselves as much as the crowd was. (It must be said…Rich’s remix of Tears For Fears’ “Pale Shelter” had the crowd in the palm of his hand.) SF was well overdue to enjoy what the DC and NYC guys have been enjoying for a couple of years now! Can’t wait for them to bring it back on November 29th!

Glad you guys had as much fun as I did!

You can hear that Pale Shelter bootleg on one of Morel’s recent podcasts. It’s after the new Verve single “Love is Noise” which is pretty cool too.
