Brent Marr Draws Fine Detail Into Every Hair
Written by NetBear on October 27, 2008 – 5:08 am -Sketch artists produce a particularly amazing kind of art. With just a pencil and paper they can bring to life scenes from their imagination that allow the viewer to step into the scene. Artist Brent Marr has a particular talent with this medium, using his pencil to define bears, blue-collar men and furry masculinity.

In Nap Time a furry muscular bear relaxes on a bed intending to have himself a nap. Wearing just a ballcap and jeans, we get to enjoy each stroke of Brent’s pencil that meticulously illustrated each hair on the sleepy bear’s torso.
Born in Spokane, Washington, Brent spent a lot of time drawing dinosaurs when he was a youngster. Later he started sketching superhero characters. In Jr. High School he began to get serious about art, particularly comic book art, drawing well-known characters such as Batman, The Teen Titans, The X-Men, and others. Later he graduated to creating his own group of superheroes “The Assembly”, which he drew in comic book form and in posters.
Through the late 80’s and early 90’s Brent continued drawing superheroes, but began to loose interest in the genre. He experimented with other media and subject matter, eventually realizing it wasn’t the characters but the men he loved to draw. He drew men of all shapes and sizes and experimented with oils, watercolors, pastels, and even colored pencils. He found that working in graphite, charcoal, carbon, and occasionally ink was a more natural and expressive outlet for his talents.

Brent makes his home in Portland, Oregon. While he still enjoys drawing the muscular “dream man,” his real interest is drawing the guy-next-door and blue collar men. He strives to make the men in his artwork as photo-realistic as possible, working from live models, pictures, and from other sources.
Where do you get your inspiration for your artwork?
That all depends really; I like to think that my taste in subject matter is a little different. One never knows what will strike me but I try to make the end product wholesome as well as sexy.
What medium do you work in?
Mostly just plain ole’ # pencil. But I do use other graphite pencils and occasionally ink, charcoal, carbon, and sometimes colored pencil.
Where do you want to take your art?
Well, that’s a tough one. Eventually I’d like to be able to do my work full time, expand my mediums, take a few classes and learn from a few of the artists that I admire. And, who knows, perhaps someday teach some classes of my own.
Where is your art taking you?
Happily it’s taking me a lot of places I never expected. I’ve done artwork for the Oregon Bears annual bear run; BEARTOWN (t-shirts media etc.) the last four years running and am gearing up to do the artwork for next year, as well as the Houston Bears Bearwatch event last years theme was military motif and this year will be a pirate theme.
I’ve worked with Stevo Harris at A Bears Life Magazine doing several illustrations and Scott McGillivray at 100 percent BEEF Magazine for a feature they did on my work. Recently someone sent me a message that they had seen one of my pieces flashed on a video screen at a Bear event in Germany.
What’s next for you?
I’m really excited about a new line of high-quality prints that I’m going to be offering on The Complete Bear. We’ll be offering a collection of my best works in an amazing selection of media from basic posters to museum grade prints in a variety of sizes. And there will even be a few framing options as well!

Though beefcake is fun to look at, Brent thinks that mechanics, construction workers, firemen, and “bears” are the real sex symbols. He hopes that people looking at his art will enjoy the same details and passion he does for the average, and not so average American male.
