Jack The Bear Was Lone Protester In Florida

Written by NetBear on November 17, 2008 – 1:19 pm -

Over the weekend there were protests all over the world to protest California’s Prop 8 and to support Marriage Equality. But as reported on Towleroad, there was just one lone protester at the city hall in Fort Myers, Florida.

Jack The Bear Protesting For Marriage Equality In Florida

Jack, a handsome smiling polar bear, showed a sign saying, “Now do I get to vote on your marriage?” Jack had this to say:

Not much of a turnout in Ft Myers. I was the only one there at city hall. I did represent though.

Here’s a BIG BEAR HUG out to Jack for being brave, standing up for his brothers and sisters, and representin’ us all in Florida.

Kudos to Jack for being brave and representing the LGTB community in Ft. Myers. I live in So.FLa and the turn out was much better in Ft. Lauderdale. Of course, it is easier for anyone to show support when you have a hundred-plus queers behind you. Let’s hope we get to see these hideous propositions overturned someday soon.

    thanks for the bear hug.

oftentimes ugly situations have a silver lining. the passage of prop 8 in california, as well as prop 2 here and 102 in arizona, and the hideous amendment in arkansas barring adoptions by anyone other than married couples, has galvanized the gay and progressive populations like no GOTV action ever has.

nationwide, people are marching who never thought they would. joe and jane average couple KNOW this was wrong, and are pissed in our behalf. marriage equality is in the wind. i hope in my lifetime (although i don’t have a candidate in mind, yet.)

as a result of the ripple in the blogosphere caused by that picture, i have met a small but talented group of men who were equally appalled that not only was there no voice to be heard that saturday, but there is no cohesive gay and gay supportive voice to be found in the naples/ft myers area.

we are going to do our level best to change that. we are starting a community blog with local and statewide information and lists and links to supportive or gay owned businesses in the area. the next time people in the sw florida area want to know how to help, what to do or where to go, they will find a voice and a resource ready on the web.

    wish us luck

    jack
