Henry Selick, the visionary animator of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, adapted Neil Gaiman’s creepy novel about a bored girl escaping to another world through a closet door. But in Coraline, be careful of what you wish for. The other side of the looking glass isn’t a very nice place to be.

Whether the camera is sweeping through an audience of appreciative Schnauzers or ogling the bazoombas on a pair of old Shakespearean thespians (voiced by the delicious Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders), the stop-motion 3-D is jaw-dropping. Dakota Fanning’s Coraline is a resilient rapscallion, matched by Teri Hatcher’s gleefully vicious turn as Other Mother. Coraline is so rich and compelling, black buttons would have to be sewn over our eyes to keep us from seeing it again.

If you’ve seen the movie, you know you want a copy on DVD or Blu-ray for your collection. If you’ve never seen the movie, you are really in for a treat. Preorder your copy at Amazon.com today.
