Ghost Of Harvey Milk Appeared During Filming
Written by NetBear on November 18, 2008 – 3:00 pm -The ghost of assassinated gay San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk is apparently haunting the space that once was his Castro Camera Shop. Director Gus Van Sant of the new Milk movie claims that Milk’s spirit turned up at the set re-creation, where a gift store now stands.
Above is a haunting short film called 575 Castro St. by Jenni Olson. It was filmed at that re-created set, in the actual space where Harvey Milk’s camera shop was.
But what makes this a truly moving film is the audio soundtrack, an edited down version of the 13-minute audio cassette that Harvey Milk recorded in his camera shop on the evening of Friday, November 18, 1977. Labeled simply: “In-Case” the tape was to be played, “in the event of my death by assassination.”

Kathy Griffin Shoots Her Woz With Bear Models
Written by NetBear on July 15, 2008 – 5:39 am -It’s well known that comedian Kathy Gifford Griffin loves “her gays.” So it was a natural that she’d get cozy with the bear community at some point. Shortly before she did a gig for IBR at the historic Castro Theater she did a photo shoot for A Bear’s Life Magazine that has been the talk of both Tinseltown and the blogosphere.

Looking like a piece of sushi all rolled-up in the bear flag, Griffin kept everyone at the photo shoot cutting-up. But guess who she dragged along to impress the bears? Apple co-founder, Kathy’s former boyfriend and billionaire bear Steve Wozniak.

Fred The Plumber Has His 40th Birthday Party
Written by NetBear on April 17, 2008 – 5:53 am -Walking through the Castro, my friend and I came upon a bunch of handsome beardy guys outside the 440 Castro Street Bar. All of them were wearing t-shirts with the “FTP” insignia on it. Being the geek that I am, I immediately assumed it was a play on the internet File Transfer Protocol. I was so wrong.

FTP stands for Fred The Plumber, a bearotic San Francisco institution that I never knew about until then. Inside there was a whole lot of celebrating going on.

The scene recreated the Gay Day Parade in 1978. Sean Penn, playing Harvey Milk, made an impassioned speech urging everyone to come out and be visible.

Sean Penn As Bearded Harvey Milk In 70’s Jeans
Written by NetBear on February 7, 2008 – 8:00 am -San Francisco has been abuzz about the filming of the movie “Milk” in the Castro. But we’ve found something that eclipses the Castro Theater makeover and antique automotives… Sean Penn’s butt in 70’s jeans!

Strange though. If we didn’t know it was Sean Penn we’d just assume it was any old Castro guy on his way to Starbears.
