Paul Parker Aged To Perfection

Written by NetBear on February 2, 2010 – 10:30 am -

I remember hearing Paul Parker’s Right On Target track at a Castro bar during the 80’s. At a time of so many girlie voices in dance music, I loved the sound of his manly voice. The next day I hit my favorite record store, Butch Wax Records, and got my first look at him. This handsome mustachioed singer was my new favorite.

Paul Parker Through The Years

Over the years Paul Parker has consistently maintained a masculine look, featuring some kind of of facial hair. Today he’s sporting a goatee and showing a little snow on the roof for his new album. Paul has turned into the salt and pepper daddy that we all knew he would be.

Castro Wifi Networks Expose Wicked Underbelly

Written by NetBear on January 3, 2010 – 5:48 am -

When visiting San Francisco every every gay bear and his grandmother has to go visit gay mecca, also known as The Castro. In its new for 2010 family-oriented and wholesome format everything looks sparkling, shiny and squeaky-clean corporate.

But just beneath the surface lies the dark and sleazy (and furry) underbelly of the Castro. Want proof? Just check the WiFi networks from The Sausage Factory.

Castro Wifi Networks

Something this funny could not be Photoshopped. So don’t let your dear sweet granny check Wifi in the area from her iPhone. She might get a surprise.

Glee Bear Makes Bearracuda Poster Appearance

Written by NetBear on December 10, 2009 – 6:07 am -

Remember that video we featured of the three bears performing a lip-sync parody of I Say A Little Prayer from Glee? Quite a few of you were smitten with the lead, Jason Whipple. Well, guess who is the cover cub of a new Bearracuda poster?

Jason Whipple on Bearracuda Poster

Parodying a now famous Rolling Stones cover with Janet Jackson, we bet there are quite a few who would want to play Mr. Hand with furry Jason.

But even if you don’t get the part, you can often see Jason in the Castro. And if you’re at the right place, you can hand him your Christmas package in person. ;)

Keep up with Jason at his website and follow him on Twitter.

Yes, there’s something about these provocative t-shirt designs that give us that warm, fuzzy feeling inside. Or could it be the cute models?

Bearded Guy Designs Bull Horn Horny

We’ve seen some of their t-shirt designs around the Castro. Bearded Guy Designs are definitely on the edgy side. Some of their t-shirts might even make you blush. The Bearded Guy doesn’t pull a punch. But that’s half of the fun these days.

Bearded Guy Designs is definitely worth a look if you have a hard to please guy on your holiday gift buying list.

Jerry Frost Art Showing At Castro Starbucks

Written by NetBear on October 2, 2009 – 1:07 pm -

San Francisco based abstract artist Jerry Frost will be showing some of his abstract paintings at the Castro neighborhood Starbucks (also known as both Starbears and Bearbucks) through October.

Jerry Frost Abstract Paintings

I’ve always enjoyed seeing Jerry’s creations at art shows and his web site. But now we’ll all get a chance to see some of his imaginative and colorful paintings up close and personal. Jerry had this to say about his art:

“My artistic journey is a process which allows me to express many levels of my life through color, texture and illusion of atmosphere on a two dimensional surface. Pushing and pulling the paint to a place of comprehensive completion is always my goal.

My palette evolves with each series. Color expresses the here and now for me. As life progresses, my color choices unfold. The work is abstract, suggestive, and always emotional. As I work the surface I simultaneously see a sense of direction, and yet I feel as if some other force is at hand and if I am open to the experience the magic will go through me. When a painting is unsuccessful, I realize that I was fighting the flow and trying to control it. When this dichotomy occurs I can play it back in my mind and see the struggle.

Oil on canvas is my medium. My tools are putty knives; smudge rags and an occasional pencil. The only brush strokes seen in my work since the eighties are in my signature, however the signature is usually scratched into the surface of the paint. Putty knives seem to be more economical and thinners are not needed so the earth gets a little break. Although my work is by no means traditional, I started painting with the basic foundation of realism. For me this was the only way to come to a place where abstraction would have depth.

I find that it is the viewer that completes the creative process. I hope you enjoy the endeavor.”

Dance Radio Station Energy 92.7 KNGY FM Sold

Written by NetBear on September 11, 2009 – 10:36 am -

Popular bay area Gay and Lesbian themed dance music station Energy 92.7 has been sold at a bargain price of just $6.5 million.

Joe Baylist and his partners in Flying Bear Media, paid $33.7 million for the Alameda frequency five years ago. Despite having a signal that didn’t cover much beyond San Francisco, Bayliss said, “we had a very successful business.” But, he admitted, “all the cash flow goes to the bank. Anybody who bought anything from 2004 till now, 99 out of 100 of those properties are going to be underwater. All those companies look foolish for how much they paid, considering what those assets are worth now.”

Energy 92.7 Sold Farewell

As of 3PM yesterday the station is no more. Apparently the entire staff was let go and the station has been renamed 92.7 REV – The Revolution featuring hip-hop and pop music. Fans of the station are invited to come party with the Energy staff tonight at The Lookout from 5PM to 9PM.

Marriage Equality 2010 Sign From The Castro

Written by NetBear on June 3, 2009 – 12:10 pm -

After visiting the go-go bears at Bear Party last Sunday afternoon, me and the husbear decided to go to the Castro to have dinner. While walking around the neighborhood we noticed some interesting signs and postcards.

Marriage Equality 2010
Click for large image.

At first I was a little perplexed. But within a few seconds you get the meaning of this somewhat cryptic iconography. Very cool, eh? Print out the large version and show it to everyone you know. It will help get the message out for marriage equality while making for some fun conversations.

The signs have a small URL printed on them for America United For Marriage. But at present there is a placeholder web page displayed. Hopefully the authors of this great imagery will surface soon.

Milk Movie Now Available On DVD And Blu-ray

Written by NetBear on March 11, 2009 – 11:45 am -

Thirty years before Barack Obama broke through a significant political color barrier, Harvey Milk tore down a similar wall that was obstructing America’s gay community from holding political office. The Milk movie is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Milk: The Movie Starring Sean Penn

Without hope life is not worth living.
You’ve got to give ‘em hope.

There are so very few movies available that serve to inspire and encourage gay people while accurately chronicling our history. Milk is a movie that every gay man and his grandmother should see. Like being “out,” it’s a movie to be discussed, shared and celebrated with our family, friends and acquaintances.
